Welcome to the Telemark Canal
With groundbreaking engineering, the Telemark Canal was completed and opened in 1892. Described as a technological marvel and one of the world’s eighth wonders, it attracted travelers from both near and far. Everyone wanted to sail on the magical waterway with its unique locks through diverse and spectacular landscapes. The 105-kilometer-long canal, from Skien to Dalen, passes through 8 impressive lock systems, 18 lock chambers, and has a total lifting height of 72 meters.
Originally built to transport goods such as timber and agricultural products from the inland areas of Telemark to the coastal cities, the canal was a vital transport route in a time when roads were scarce, and the railroad had not yet reached the area. Today, the Telemark Canal is a cultural and historical gem, taking you on a journey through time and nature—an experience that demonstrates how Norway combined trade and transport with the challenges of the natural landscape.
Sail through historic locks, surrounded by majestic mountains, lush forests, and picturesque small towns, and experience the magic that has enchanted travelers for over 130 years.
